In March 2023, Worldcoin introduced World ID, a new privacy preserving digital identity protocol that lets anyone prove they are a human in the digital world. World ID’s proof of personhood (PoP) is enabled by the Orb, a custom biometric imaging device.
To date, the World ID software development kit (SDK) has been available to developers via a limited waitlist. This has allowed more than 100 projects to be built with World ID—including flagship integrations like Okta’s Auth0, a global authentication and authorization platform, and Talent Protocol, a leading social and economic platform for web3 builders in Europe.
Starting today, the SDK is publicly available to developers worldwide.
Building with World ID
The World ID SDK makes web, mobile and on-chain integrations fast and simple. It includes a web widget (JS), Developer Portal, development simulator, examples, guides and more. Given World ID’s permissionless architecture, it is freely available for developers around the world to integrate with it.
World ID is also designed to support existing open identity standards. Already, it supports OAuth 2.0 and OIDC (OpenID Connect), and it is capable of supporting Verifiable Credentials (VCs), Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and Sign in with Ethereum (SIWE) in the future.
The benefits of World ID
World ID gives builders a powerful solution for verifying users are human while protecting against bots. The simple human verification offered by “Sign in with Worldcoin” means devs can collect only what’s necessary from users to access their service.
World ID also offers a clear benefit to users, who can maintain their privacy across apps and services. When signing in with Worldcoin, a person’s World ID, app accounts, PoP verifications and wallets are not linked together. No one, not even Worldcoin contributors or app developers, can track them across websites, identify the World ID connected to the account or generally know more about the person. In general, global PoP will unlock a new generation of products and services, including:
- Social networks. Bot protection, community moderation, content attribution
- Voting. DAO governance, elections, online polls
- Financial services. Undercollateralized lending, card fraud, compliance
- Customer incentives. Loyalty programs, coupons, referrals, free trials
- Marketplaces. Reputation, fake reviews, fake transactions, scalper prevention
- Money distribution. Social programs, development assistance, disaster relief, non-profit aid, scholarships, crypto airdrops, UBI

General availability of the World ID SDK comes just a week after Worldcoin announced that the project passed 2 million World ID sign-ups during its beta phase—a milestone that was reached in less than half the time it took to verify the first million World ID holders.
